Grasping the New Direction of China-ROK Development: the Pangoal Institution and Korea East Asia Foundation jointly held the 4th China-ROK Strategic Dialogue

On November 8, the 4th "the Pangoal Institution -Korea East Asia Foundation China-ROK Strategic Dialogue" was held in Beijing. Director of the East Asia Foundation, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Korea, Kim Sung-hwan, Special Assistant to the President of the United Nations Foreign Affairs and Security, Chung-in Moon, members of Congress, Choo Mi-ae, Park Sun-sook, former South Korean ambassador to the United States, Choi Young-jin, etc. Visited the Pangoal Institution, and discussed with Yi Peng, president of the the Pangoal Institution, Executive Director Bai Yunfeng, Senior Consultant Yu Hongjun, Shi Yinhong and other Chinese experts and scholars on the current hot topics such as the construction of peace mechanism in Northeast Asia and China-ROK relations.

The opening ceremony of this dialogue was hosted by Wang Dong, the secretary general of the the Pangoal Institution Academic Committee and the executive deputy director of the China-US Peole-to-people Exchange Research Base of Peking University. Yi Peng, president of the Pangoal Institution, and Kim Sung-hwan, director of the East Asia Foundation and former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Korea, delivered the speech as the organizer.

In his opening speech, president Yi Peng first extended a warm welcome to Professor Kim Sung-hwan and his party. He said that the the Pangoal Institution and the East Asia Foundation have maintained effective communication and exchanges. Since 2016, the two sides have held seven exchange activities. president Yi Peng stressed that at present, the situation in Northeast Asia is facing a new crossroads. Moving forward may bring Northeast Asia into a long-term peace. If go back, it may lead to abandonment. At this critical juncture, we need further open communication and cross-border exchanges to enable the two sides to move forward in a crucial period and promote mutual understanding and peace and stability in Northeast Asia.

Kim Sung-hwan, director of the East Asia Foundation and former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of South Korea, expressed his gratitude to the Pangoal Institution and president Yi Peng. He believes that the promotion of the peace process on the Korean Peninsula cannot be separated from China's active support. Think tanks can build a public diplomacy platform that enhances mutual understanding and play a more important role. The Beijing Dialogue Conference brings together the authoritative experts of the two countries and hopes to further explore the cooperation between China and South Korea on the basis of mutual understanding through today's dialogue meeting.

Yu Hongjun said that the relaxation of the situation on the peninsula is a relevant party in Northeast Asia, including the long-awaited major changes of the Chinese and Korean peoples, and a positive trend that is conducive to the peaceful development of the entire region and win-win cooperation. He believes that the multilateral consultation mechanism should be adopted to enhance the mutual reliance of all parties to maintain the tempering of the peninsula. It also emphasizes that the easing of the peninsula must be linked to the economic direction and common development. China should further strengthen with South Korea and North Korea. Economic and trade exchanges and in-depth docking of the "Belt and Road" initiative will not only help to promote the economic development of Northeast China, but also serve as an opportunity to promote peace and stability in Northeast Asia.

Ms. Choo Mi-ae said that the four-year China-South Korea Strategic Dialogue has been a meeting of profound significance for the construction of the peace mechanism on the Korean Peninsula and has contributed to strengthening the mutual understanding and cooperation between the two governments. She pointed out that the issue of "trust, coexistence and tolerance" should be resolved in the 21st century and facing the Korean Peninsula, and I agree with the maintenance of peace on the peninsula and economic cooperation and common development. Later, the meeting entered the round-table discussion session. Scholars from both sides continued to discuss and exchange topics such as "China-ROK cooperation on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the construction of a peace mechanism" and "changes in Sino-US relations and the future of the Korean Peninsula." The two seminars were hosted by Yue Li, Executive Director of the Northeast Asian Research Center of the Pangoal Institution, and Oh Young-hwan, a commentator of the Central Daily News of South Korea. Both scholars agreed that China and South Korea should be peaceful and stable on the Korean Peninsula and the construction of a peace mechanism in Northeast Asia. We will strengthen communication and exchanges, seek opportunities for peace development, and work together to promote peace and development in Northeast Asia.




The executive director Bai Yunfeng said that both China and South Korea are active advocates of peace in Northeast Asia.
